SINGAPORE - An integrated nursing home and senior care centre at Henderson was officially opened on Tuesday (Feb 27).
Having commenced operations last year, St. Andrew's Nursing Home and Senior Care Centre at Henderson, or SANH (Henderson), is the latest addition to St. Andrew's Mission Hospital.
Featuring an 'open concept', the home has been designed to encourage and allow residents to interact with the community, especially those living in the Henderson, Telok Blangah and Bukit Merah districts.
For example, exercise equipment within the facility is open to both residents and the public.
Senior Minister of State for Health Mr. Chee Hong Tat, who officiated the event, said it is part of the government's efforts to foster a caring, cohesive and inclusive society.
"We are designing our nursing homes to be welcoming and to invite the larger community to engage with seniors in our homes," he said.
Mr John Chan, executive director, of SANH (Henderson), said the home aims to promote intergenerational interactions in the community.
The home's proximity to a nearby childcare centre, Sparkletots, is one way through which he hopes to bring cheer and energy to the residents.
Other efforts to encourage integration include dialect classes conducted for staff members to help them better communicate with residents.
"SANH (Henderson) does not want to be a closed-door gated institution," he said.
"We welcome our neighbours and the communities around us to come and befriend our residents, to help us conduct social and recreational programmes for our residents and clients at the senior care centre."
